Safety on the General Care Floor

The growing body of research suggests a link between post-operative hypoxemia and post-operative mental confusion. Undetected hypoxemia represents a significant patient safety issue.

The dangers of post-operative hypoxemia may be considerable on the general care floor, where the nurse/patient ratio is lower then it is in acute care areas of the hospital. Further, the architecture of many units prevents direct patient observation. Undetected hypoxemia can adversely affect cardiac, cerebral, and respiratory function, delay wound healing, and increase the risk of infection.

This video program includes the views of leaders in anesthesiology, surgery, and risk management. We hope it contributes to greater understanding of the prevalence and risk of undetected hypoxemia on the general care floor.
